![]() Both come with the same Fox Racing trick dampers that are fed a passel of data, from the truck’s attitude, to slow- and high-speed bumps and how quickly you’re mashing through them, what 4×4 mode you’re in, etc. The only difference is a slight spring rate increase on the R’s front end. The R also gets some interior upgrades and 37-inch tires (the regular Raptor uses 35s).īoth the R and the regular 450-horsepower Raptor, which doesn’t really change at all this year, share a suspension and most of the same off-road and interior bits. Once you’re on the pavement it can rip to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, which is just stupid fun. But with a monster 640 pound-feet of torque, massive tires, a two-speed transfer case, and multiple modes (slippery, rock crawl, off-road and Baja) that counter wheelspin this Ford laughed its way through the endeavor we might as well have been driving on the Interstate. We took the Raptor R up a snowy, muddy bypass that features plenty of boulders, gnarled logs, water bars and some tight turnarounds. It costs a whopping $30,000 more than the regular V6 version, but bragging rights matter to the folks who like these, and the Raptor R has plenty to brag about. For 2023, the Blue Oval has unleashed a counteroffensive with a second variant, the V8-powered, 700-horsepower F-150 Raptor R. The three-motor Plaid version is claimed to get under 3 seconds.Although it largely originated the off-road, desert-bashing muscle truck species, the last couple of years have seen the Ford F-150 Raptor a little overshadowed by newer competitors, and specifically Ram’s over-the-top TRX and to a lesser extent a new breed of electric pickups. That puts it on a par with what Tesla is claiming for the mid-range dual motor Cybertruck which is claimed to have 690-hp and 824 lb-ft of torque. ![]() According to Ford, it will make the 0-60 sprint in the low to mid 4 second range which certainly seemed believable from the passenger seat. The new Lightning is not exactly svelte at near 6.500-lbs empty, but it does put the instant torque of electric motors to good use. Today, a Ram 1500 TRX in a high-riding off-road configuration has 702-hp and runs to 60 mph on a bumpy dirt road in 3.7 secs. Despite its modest by 2021 standards output, the 4,700-lb truck could get to 60 mph in about 5.2 seconds according to Car and Driver at the time. It produced a mere 380-hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The last F-150 Lightning built from 1999 to 2004 was a regular cab, short-bed model with a supercharged 5.4-liter V8. The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning prototype had no problem with playing in the mud Sam Abuelsamidįinally, we took the Lightning out on the high-speed loop. Like the new plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler, you can open the windows and enjoy the sounds of nature with an essentially silent vehicle. The trail we rode on featured multiple locations where the belly was dragging over the crest of a bump but it went through the course without any real hesitation. The Lightning is equipped with full length steel skid plates to protect both motors and the battery. ![]() The Lightning is going through the same durability testing regimen as any other F-150 and that includes running through narrow trails, mud bogs and over dirt moguls. Next up I hopped into another truck to experience its off-road capability. Those that have to tow heavy loads over long distances on a regular basis will probably want to stick with a gas or diesel option for now. Nonetheless, towing with an electric truck is probably something best reserved for shorter distances or occasional use. Currently about 5% of EAs sites have this configuration.
